Kruaithong's grandmother, Subin Khongthap, whose age was reported to be around 82 to 84 years, was at a viewing party at the Kruaithong family home in Ban Phon Muang of Chumphon Buri district when she suddenly fell down while cheering for her grandson.

She reportedly regained consciousness 5 minutes later and was then  taken to the local hospital where she later died.

Speculations initially suggested  that the weightlifter's mother died as a result of heart failure but we still await the hospital's official report concerning her death.
It was reported that the grandmum's death was not revealed to the athlete when he gave a post-podium interview.

Kruaithong, who is the second Thai athlete to medal at the Rio games 2016, placed third behind China's Long Qingquan and North Korea's Om Yun Chol.
