Thugs attack Workers and Journalists in Bayelsa State

Some hoodlums on Tuesday, August 16 in
Yenagoa, the Bayelsa state capital
disrupted a peaceful protest carried out by
members of Nigerian Union of Local
Government Employees (NULGE) and
Medical and Health Workers Union
(MHWUN).

The joint council of NULGE and MHWUN
released a statement based on what
happened stating that the protest was in
consonance with the struggle for a better
welfare of members in Bayelsa.

“We are demanding that the affected
four chairmen of councils and
commissioner for local government
should immediately pay the bailout
funds to workers of the affected council
to avoid unpleasant consequences and
sustain the peaceful industrial
atmosphere in the system.
“JSEC unequivocally demands for the
full payment of the salary of March; we
demand the release of LGAs allocations
to the councils immediately,” they
stated.
In addition, it was observed that
journalists were beaten to pulp by the
hoodlums with a good number of them
sustaining various degrees of injuries and
losing their valuables, including money
and gadgets.
One of the those attacked, John Odhe, a
journalist with the state-owned newspaper,
Newwavem, stated,his experience was
horrible.
“It was like a movie as the thugs
descended on us and started
manhandling us with planks and
stones; I managed to escape for fear of
my life,” Odhe stated.
